Our Village
Kirby Hill is a small rural village approximately one mile north of the market town of Boroughbridge in North Yorkshire. Formerly known as Kirby-on-the-Moor, the village is surrounded by open countryside on 3 sides and affords long-range views towards the North Yorkshire Moors and the Yorkshire Dales. The picture shows an aerial view of the village taken from the west.
The Grade 1 listed church of All Saints, Kirby-on-the-Moor is over 1,000 years old. Kirby Hill Church of England Primary School has an excellent reputation and a new school building, opened in June 2002. The village pub is the Blue Bell Inn on Leeming Lane, where you can be sure of a warm welcome, good food and a range of guest beers. Kirby Hill has its own distinct identity, community and sense of place - separate from the market town of Boroughbridge, yet within a mile of its many facilities. We hope you enjoy using this website to find out more about our vibrant community.

WELL, WELL, WHAT HAVE WE HERE...
21 January 2012: The historic Kirby Hill village well on the village green near the postbox was seriously damaged last year, when a vehicle reversed into it (it's not too late to come forward if it was you!) Kirby Hill & District Parish Council has commissioned some repairs and the damaged stone well-head has now been removed, revealing the well. Before it is sealed again, the opportunity was taken to lower a video camera to the bottom of the well and inspect the interior. The video shows the intricate brickwork that lines the top of the well and the rock that was carved through, probably centuries ago, to provide water for the village. The video is available online. Click here to view the descent to the bottom of the Kirby Hill village well. Repairs to the well are costing the Parish Council a significant sum, probably running into thousands of pounds. If you would like to make a donation towards the repair of the well, please contact the Parish Clerk by clicking here.
PROPOSED KIRBY HILL MSA - SECRETARY OF STATE RE-OPENS INQUIRY
20 December 2011: Kirby Hill RAMS (Residents Against Motorway Services) have received notification that the Secretary of State is re-opening the Public Inquiry into proposed motorway services on the A1(M), because he does not have sufficient information to make a decision. The re-opened Inquiry will start on 21st February at the Yorkshire Hotel, Harrogate and will last for approximately two weeks. Most of that time will be taken up examining additional evidence the Secretary of State has requested in respect of one of the proposed sites at Baldersby, however Kirby Hill RAMS will be reviewing and responding to any evidence submitted by Heather Ive Associates in respect of the proposed Kirby Hill site. The Inquiry will be held by a new Inspector since the previous one has retired. It will not review the planning merits of each proposed MSA site, only the additional information the Secretary of State has requested. As a result, the Secretary of State's decision is now expected in late summer 2012.
The RAMS Closing Submission to the 2011 Public Inquiry is available online here. You can also click here for details of the proposed development and here for details of how you can help defeat this scheme.
